Squad log 18: 10-13-25
We started our day hanging out under trees with plans to have a longer window of time before we head anywhere on foot, because a few flyers were running behind. This is always a great chance to have longer conversations and spooky season came up! We are all frustrated that the weather is only partially cooperating with our seasonal request for epic wardrobes and costumes but we talked about the excitement for weather changes and how good Squad feels when the air has a chill to it!
We tend to walk miles more when there is a chill and we get to wear layered clothing… most of us have concluded that our clothing and the weather play a big role in how we feel about ourselves in public. Discussions on perception and points of view led us into ROBLOX talk — our favorite games, who we play with, how we know them and what we do to stay safe online. These discussions are never forced and we make plenty of space for the squad to opt in or out of sharing their opinions. These conversations bring up so many questions and curiosities among the squad and the support and guidance is often conjured up in a group sense, rather than from an adult like in typical spaces.
There’s a new Sonny Angel drop and you know what that means... HAHA a ritual trip to Toy Joy! It’s a good thing these teens are gainfully employed and support these growing collectible collections.
A couple of flyers are also besties and combined their cash to raise a Tamagotchi together!
As we sat outside one of our homes away from home on bright chairs and tables, opening up blind boxes we talked about the history of Sonny Angels and why they were created. These are peculiar little characters that were designed by Toru Soeya and modeled after the Kewpie Doll.
We all shared what we think and made space for everyone’s opinions on these interesting little “angels” and all agreed that the headgear on them is kind of adorable, even if they are somewhat… different.
A couple more stops at places to look at clothes, accessories and music then
we made a plan for some chips and queso! We planned to discuss what all we wanted to do, we ended up doing a collaborative doodle on one flyers in-n-out “activity sheet”
This was a fun way to pass something around that we all contributed to, and involve everyone in the group conversation by finding a common ground. This sparked some connections over shared interests and past experiences.
After a snack we decided we wanted to head to the roof of the Austin Public Library for some of the best views of the river and a perfect place to eat later. We hung out for a long while, talking about so many things and missing a few of our regular squad members. Someone was extra hungry and we felt a little bored of our location so we headed toward Trader Joes to hang in a shady spot with chairs, a green space and views of high rise apartments. We talked about urban life and cost of living in places like this, and just spent the rest of our time there, making space for our group dynamic to grow before heading to meet parents at our pickup spot for the day. A really good flight for the books!
