Based in the values of Self-Directed Education, Flying Squads provide young people in Austin with time to practice making their own decisions in a nurturing community and taking up public space on what are considered conventional school days.

Each day starts at a meeting place, then sets out into the downtown Austin walking, wandering and way-finding while experimenting with community decision making, taking up space during conventional school days and having fun!

We provide young people with time in a nurturing community of practice through which they can develop relationships and work on self-confidence with genuine feedback from peers and society.

Thursdays

drop off at 10am - pickup at 3pm

our location is intentionally private for the safety of our families - only active squad families will have access to this information

Squad is $135 per month or $40 per Flight

Unlike school field trips, the Flying Squads do not have a predetermined destination but instead practice the crucial skills of deciding together where to go and how to spend their time.

Flying Squads are perfect for Austin area homeschoolers, unschoolers, self-directed learners who are particularly interested in Youth Rights — parents must be willing to trust in their child to be safe and in themselves to not impose their will on their youth.
