Squad log 10: 4-25-2025

“What starts here, changes the world”

We started our day quietly as we waited around for our squad to arrive, one or two at a time. The Capital was off in the distance, the sound of morning downtown traffic, and familiar grackle birds with a cool breeze, setting the day. We set out on our 10th flight by meandering through the university grounds along the speedway. Students were walking to their classes, sitting around in various seating areas, studying, and just living. We observed all the energy, talking about the art installations we came across.

The day really started to warm up quickly, and we needed to find a toilet – when we decided to make our way toward West campus, we took 27th toward Guadalupe and stumbled upon a shaded area with great seating and a coffee shop! We sat around for a while.. The trees swayed, we laughed, talked, and snacked. Each week, we learn more about one another and connect over shared interests or learn about one another's preferences and limits. This really helps us know how to navigate our days in the city together better, but certainly takes time.

On our walk down “The Drag,” aka Guadalupe, one flier had something in their bag they wanted to return to a store – they were not sure if they had to return to the exact location of a store, or if any location would do. We quickly went over all the things they'd need to process a smooth return and headed that way!

A few things were picked up along the way, including a cotton candy cake that a few fliers intended to devour after lunch. We stopped in some trendy shops and browsed music, clothing, and books. So much conversation happens in these locations. We talk about the cost of goods a lot, because we all only have so many dollars. This really makes us think a lot about value, cost, and labor. These locations are also just great reprieves from the sun and have awesome furniture to lounge around on. The staff people seem welcoming to our squad.

Since one of our squad mates wasn't present the week prior, and they had been waiting weeks to walk to fried chicken, we headed toward the spot! It was busy and a little loud, but we were able to find seats and sit a while with a mix of home-packed foods and fries, and tenders covering the tables. After a while, we decided to retrace our steps and head back toward the campus and take the long walk back to our parting spot, chasing the shade along the way.

We hope you’ll join us on our next flight!
